Choir during an Evensong

The Choir

The Johanneskantorei, the choir of the Johanneskirche, Düsseldorf's central Protestant church, has a membership of 90 singers who enjoy singing every style of sacred music. We perform challenging works from the Renaissance to the present.

Church Services

We are involved in special services as well as evensong where we sing a-cappella works or cantatas. In addition to this, members of the choir participate in Sunday services in small individual groups.

Concerts

We perform two to three major choir concerts every year. Thus, our repertoire includes the following important works: the St John's Passion, the St Matthew's Passion, the Christmas Oratorio (Bach); Missa Solemnis (Beethoven); Mass (Bernstein); Der Großinquisitor (Blacher); A German Requiem (Brahms); Te Deum (Bruckner); Heilige Zeichen (Eben); Jephtha (Händel); The Creation (Haydn); King David (Honegger); The Armed Man (Jenkins); Lobgesang, Paulus (Mendelssohn); Petite Messe Solennelle (Rossini); Requiem, Quattro Pezzi Sacri (Verdi).

A special highlight was the staged performance of Verdi's Nabucco in 2010, the first production ever of this opera in a church.

Travel and Social Activities

We not only come together to sing, we also meet socially, for example after rehearsals and at parties following our concerts. Furthermore, we have a good tradition of going on concert tours. The last few took the Johanneskantorei to Düsseldorf's twin city Reading in England in 2006, to Chile in 2007, in 2009 to the south of France and in 2011 again to England to visit our twin choir Reading Festival Chorus. The two choirs combined to perform Bruckners magnificent »Te Deum« and »Quattro Pezzi Sacri« by Verdi. Our twin choir is expected to return our visit and join us in a performance as part of the annual autumn cultural festival, the altstadtherbst kulturfestival, on the 17 Sep 2011. Read on »

Curious?

The Johanneskantorei is happy to welcome new members who enjoy singing and are willing to take part in regular rehearsals in order to contribute to making concerts and participation in church services possible. We look forward to hearing from you.
